What is Room in Roof Insulation?

When a roof space such as a loft is converted into a room in roof (RIR) it requires a different type of insulation than a normal room. Without room in roof insulation, the RIR is extremely susceptible to temperature changes in the summer and winter. In addition, without insulation the rest of the property will also suffer from heat loss during the winter, meaning more heating is required to keep the house warm, therefore it means higher heating costs. Installing room in roof insulation will keep heat in during the winter and will keep it out during the summer.

How it works:

  • Room in roof insulation boards are secured with fixing through the existing plasterboard in the walls, sloped walls, and ceiling
  • In the remaining loft space above the room, 300mm of loft insulation is rolled out over the ceiling frame
  • Then specially designed sealant is used to fill small gaps between boards to ensure no heat can escape
  • Plaster is then placed over the insulation boards to give the roof a smooth finish
  • 7 days after the plaster has been applied the room in roof is ready for painting and decorating

Why do it?

  • Room in Roof insulation lasts for more than 40 years
  • The cost of energy bills will be significantly reduced
  • It is one of the most efficient kinds of insulation, due to the fact that heat rises and commonly escapes through the roof

What properties can this be carried out on?

Room in roof insulation can be carried out on properties that use their loft space as a living space (loft conversion). Other properties that commonly receive room in the roof insulation include dwellings on the top floor of a large house that has been converted into flats.

What is the cost of this work?

The cost of the work will depend on the size of your home and the area of the walls to be insulated. Our installers offer competitive prices and even finance options for those who cannot afford to pay the full amount in one lump sum and in some cases the cost can be partially or completely covered by energy grant funding.
