BUS – Boiler Upgrade Scheme

BUS stands for boiler upgrade scheme and is a government scheme that helps homeowners to afford the high upfront costs associated with installing an Air Source Heat Pump. Grants of up to £5,000 are available for homeowners in England and Wales and up to £7,500 or £9,000 in different areas of Scotland.

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) are a highly efficient way of providing heating and hot water in a property. They draw in heat from the outside air and transfer it into water which is used to heat your property. It also heats water that is stored in a water cylinder to provide you hot water.

To apply for the BUS, the property must be a privately-owned residential dwelling that is not used for social housing. You must be replacing an old fossil fuel or electric heating system. The property must also have a valid Energy Performance Certificate that does not show recommendations for loft insulation or cavity wall insulation.

An Air Source Heat Pump is up to 300% more efficient than other heating systems!

When an Air Source Heat Pump is paired with solar panels, it greatly reduces heating costs. This is beacuse ASHP’s use electricity, and when this is generated via solar panels, it is FREE!

Air Source Heat Pumps do require a small amount of space on the outside of the property for the unit. In some circumstances there may not be room for the unit, However there are some alternatives covered by the BUS should this be the case.
