What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An air source heat pump is a heating system that works by transferring heat from outside air into
heated water which can be distributed around your home using radiators
to increase the temperature of your home. This method of heating uses air to heat the property
rather than gas, oil, or electricity. While it does use electricity to operate it is far less than a normal
electric heating system would use. Air source heat pump units are best positioned immediately
outside the property, such as against a property wall in the garden for example.
What are the benefits of using an Air Source Heat Pump to heat my home?
Low carbon footprint, this means that they can significantly reduce your carbon emissions as they
use the air from outside to heat your home rather than coal/oil/gas. This means it is a great
alternative to cut emissions.
Reduce energy bills, Due to the air source heat pump system using air to heat your home, it requires
far less electricity than electric powered heating systems do. This saves you money as you are using
less electricity and therefore are not paying as much on your electric bill.
Long lifespan, Air source heat pumps have a very long lifespan. With proper maintenance modern
heat pumps can run efficiently for around 25 years before they need replacing. Compare this to a
boiler that typically lasts 10-15 years.
Low maintenance, to maintain an air source heat pump it is relatively easy. It only requires a
technician to come out once a year to keep it running optimally e.g., clearing leaves/dust, replacing
filters, and checking for leaks.
No fuel storage needed, other heating system use fuel such as oil or bottled gas. This isn’t required
for air source heat pumps as they use the outside air, therefore storage isn’t required for any fuels,
giving you more space on your property and keeping it looking clean as there’s no need for large oil
tanks or gas bottles.
How do I get an Air Source Heat Pump?
Typically, to have an air source heat pump installed privately its going to cost you around £18,000.
However, if you our eligible you could potentially have one installed for free under the ECO4
scheme. See our ECO funding page or our free eligibility check for more details. Once you are ready
for the installation it will only take around 2 days for the air source heat pump installation to take
place.
