As the UK accelerates its journey towards net-zero emissions, heat pumps are emerging as a pivotal solution for sustainable home heating.
With escalating energy costs, enhanced government incentives and significant technological advancements, 2025 is shaping up to be the year heat pump enquiries and installations grow. But what’s helping this rise and how can homeowners take advantage of the latest funding support?
Heat pump enquiries are on the rise
The number of homeowners inquiring about heat pumps with Octopus Energy in 2024 saw a dramatic increase of 144% compared to the previous year, reaching over 200,000 inquiries.
With a government target of 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028, the UK is pushing hard to make heat pumps a mainstream heating solution.
Funding Support
One of the biggest challenges with heat adoption has been the upfront costs associated with heat pump installation. The UK government is addressing this with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). This program offers homeowners a £7,500 grant towards upgrading their heating system to a heat pump.
The BUS scheme has made heat pumps more affordable, often bringing costs in line or even below that of replacing a traditional gas boiler. Combining that with long term energy savings and reduced carbon emissions, it’s no surprise that more homeowners are making the switch.
On 30 January 2025, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced a further £25 million of funding will be made available for the 2024/2025 financial year, increasing the total BUS budget to £205 million.

Why heat pumps?
Aside from the funding support available, heat pumps offer significant economic and environmental benefits.
Lower energy bills – Heat pumps are 3-5 times more efficient than gas boilers, reducing running costs and keeping energy bills low.
Lower carbon emissions – They run on electricity, which is increasingly becoming more powered by renewables, helping out household carbon footprints.
Future proofing homes – With government regulations moving away from fossil fuel heating, installing a heat pump now ensures compliance with future standards.
Challenges and the path ahead
While heat pumps offer major benefits, with anything there are challenges which can halt widespread adoption. Installation costs can still be high without funding, and older homes may require better insulation to boost efficiency to its maximum. However, ongoing funding support, improving technology, and industry growth are making heat pumps more accessible.
Is 2025 the year of the heat pump?
With growing interest and government backing, heat pumps are no longer a niche solution, they are becoming the future of home heating. If you are considering making the switch, now is the perfect time.
